Severe Melasma Sufferer Finally Takes Off Her Makeup Thanks to Fraxel

Patrick Carney, MD
Edina, MN

The following is an excerpt of a letter sent to Dr. Patrick Carney's office two days after the treatment of a patient with severe melasma. This particular patient has suffered from melasma for her entire adult life and has carried heavy makeup with her on a daily basis, retouching her cover-up constantly over the course of a day. For nearly twenty years, she did not allow anyone to see her without makeup on to hide the discoloration caused by her melasma.

Hi Deb!

Hey thanks again for the referral for the Fraxel. I think all the the gals at the spa could see that I was in desperate need of the treatment!

The results were not totally what I expected in terms of the recovery. I looked at the ladies who had it done right before me and they looked perfectly normal, not much swelling or redness, so I thought I would look the same when I was finished.

Because I needed such a severe treatment, I think they quadrupled the intesity...which was good, but a hard recovery. To top it all off, I got the flu that night. So I looked like a giant smurf (because of the blue dye used) with a basketball-sized head and ready to get sick at any moment.

The recovery on one side of my face is still in the works. I had several scabbed areas that are trying to heal, and my eye was swollen almost completely shut for a couple days. HOWEVER, the BEST news is that I think it completely got rid of my melasma , or most of it anyway! There are a few spots that could use more treatments, but it worked really well.

Now if it will just heal completely, I could see the total results...I can't wait.

I would love to continue to be a test case if they'd like...they get some good pictures!! :)

Thanks so much!! Kim

Note that the blue dye comes off easily now as Fraxel users across the country have learned what to use to get all of the color to come off.

Also note that most patients after mild or moderate treatment do not require more than 1-2 days for recovery, which is typically referred to as "social" downtime. You can wear makeup and continue normal activites following Fraxel treatment, but may appear red and flaky for a short period of time.

If you have melasma, sun damage, acne scarring, uneven skin tone, uneven pigmentation, and wrinkles, you could be a good candidate for Fraxel treatment.

This story aired on KARE 11 in early May 2007, featuring a mother of three who began to notice the way genetics and life were taking shape on her face. "It was getting deeper and I couldn't massage it out, and I couldn't get it to go away, so I thought maybe that Botox isn't such a bad idea," she said.

The Local Lift is a face lift performed under local anesthesia, an alternative method of facial rejuvenation which does not require full general anesthesia and can be performed in-office. The cost is lower and the recovery time can be dramatically reduced.
